Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), Prof. Dr. Robert Holzmann, delivered a lecture on the topic “Economic Convergence with the European Union: Aspirations, Conditions, and Experiences” at the Faculty of Economics, University of Montenegro.

During his inspiring lecture, Governor Holzmann emphasized that “stable institutions are essential for accession to the European Union, and the independence of the central bank is a key element in the process of economic convergence.”

“Although Montenegro can be proud of its impressive economic growth, the convergence with the European Union is not yet complete, as the income gap between Montenegro and the Eurozone remains significant,” stated the Governor of the Austrian central bank.

While analyzing the differences between the economies of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe and the Western Balkans, Governor Holzmann pointed out that the positive effects of EU integration are evident and substantial, primarily resulting from accession to the single European market. He further underlined the importance of Montenegro “resolutely pursuing its goal of EU membership in the shortest possible timeframe.”

The lecture was jointly organized by the Central Bank of Montenegro and the Faculty of Economics as part of Governor Holzmann’s first visit to the Central Bank of Montenegro. The event brought together numerous representatives of the financial sector, diplomatic community, international institutions and students who had the opportunity to engage in discussion and exchange views with Governor Holzmann on current economic issues.
