At the invitation of Dr Martin Kocher, Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), the CBCG Governor attended a conference bringing together senior representatives of central banks, international institutions and the financial sector.
CBCG Governor, Dr Irena Radović, participated today in Vienna in the conference titled “New challenges in safeguarding financial stability and managing financial crises in a world of digital finance and artificial intelligence: implications for central banks”. Governor Radović attended the conference at the invitation of Dr Martin Kocher, Governor of the OeNB. The event was jointly organised by the OeNB, the European Money and Finance Forum (SUERF), the Joint Vienna Institute (JVI) and Yale University’s Program on Financial Stability.
Governor Radović spoke on the panel “Financial Stability in a Rapidly Changing Environment”, which explored the impact of geopolitical tensions, evolving financial conditions and changes in financial intermediation on financial system resilience and economic growth.
Speaking about Montenegro, Governor Radović emphasised that domestic reforms and the EU accession process, supported by favourable international conditions, had contributed to stronger institutions and greater financial system resilience. She also highlighted the potential of non-bank financing to diversify sources of capital, while stressing the need to closely monitor cross-border risks and the concentration of investments in major financial centres.
Governor Radović identified the interaction between external shocks and domestic vulnerabilities as a key challenge for the period ahead. Rapid credit growth and rising property prices require careful monitoring, while developments in tourism, energy prices and global financial conditions may affect revenues and financing costs. She underscored the importance of early risk identification, macroprudential measures and maintaining adequate buffers within the banking system.
The conference was also attended by Klaas Knot, former Governor of De Nederlandsche Bank and former Chair of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), Pablo Hernández de Cos, General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Tobias Adrian, Financial Counsellor and Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Cornelia Holthausen, Director General at the European Central Bank (ECB), Claudia Buch, Chair of the ECB's Supervisory Board, and Rolf Strauch, Chief Economist and Member of the Management Board of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), alongside other senior representatives of central banks, international institutions and the financial sector.
Participants also discussed the impact of digital finance and artificial intelligence on banks, the role of central banks in crisis management and as lenders of last resort, as well as regulatory and supervisory responses to emerging risks.
