Governor Radović in Brussels: CBCG delivers tangible results and accelerates Montenegro’s financial integration into the EU
05/05/2026
CBCG Governor Irena Radović, took part today in Brussels in the Economic and Financial Dialogue with the European Union, organised under the auspices of the European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Valdis Dombrovskis, and chaired by the Ministers of Finance of Cyprus, Ireland and Lithuania – the countries forming the current Presidency Trio of the Council of the European Union.
The Dialogue brought together senior officials from the Council of the European Union, the European Commission and the ECB, as well as representatives of partner countries, to discuss current macroeconomic developments, reform priorities and further alignment of economic and financial policies with European Union standards.
At the meeting, Joint Conclusions with recommendations from the European Commission were adopted, noting, among other things, that Montenegro’s banking system has remained stable, profitable and well-capitalised, with a further reduction in the level of non-performing loans.
“In conditions of heightened geopolitical uncertainty and volatility, preserving stability and confidence remains our core mandate. The CBCG acts preventively by strengthening macroprudential instruments and safeguarding the resilience of the financial system,” Governor Radović emphasised.
Speaking about Montenegro’s European path, the Governor highlighted that the CBCG was moving from the phase of formal alignment to that of full implementation and institutional readiness. Particular emphasis was placed on tangible results in financial integration.
“Montenegro is already delivering tangible integration results ahead of membership. Following accession to SEPA, the country is operationally integrated into the European payments area, while the introduction of the TIPS Clone system in July 2026 will enable full interoperability with the European instant payments infrastructure. In doing so, we are directly contributing to the European digital finance agenda and reducing the distance between markets, capital and citizens.”
The Governor also underlined that the CBCG is simultaneously implementing a comprehensive institutional transformation:
“Through the Needs Assessment and the reform roadmap for ESCB readiness, the CBCG is systematically preparing for full integration into the European institutional framework, in close cooperation with Eurosystem central banks.”
During her visit to Brussels, Governor Radović also held a separate bilateral meeting with Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General at the European Commission for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG ENEST). The meeting confirmed a shared commitment to accelerating Montenegro’s European path, with a particular focus on progress in key negotiating chapters 9 (Financial Services) and 17 (Economic and Monetary Policy).
The Governor noted that the CBCG continues to deliver tangible results in the European integration process that directly contribute to strengthening financial infrastructure, reducing costs for citizens and businesses, and further integrating Montenegro into the EU single market.
The discussion also covered the broader framework of economic and institutional reforms, with strong coordination between national institutions and the European Commission. The CBCG remains a reliable and proactive partner to the European Commission in the accession process, with a clear focus on fulfilling remaining obligations and achieving measurable results in the shortest possible timeframe.
“For Montenegro, the European path and future integration into the ESCB are not only a strategic objective, but a key pillar of stability and long-term economic development,” Governor Radović concluded.
In addition to Governor Radović, the Montenegrin delegation includes Milica Adžić, State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, and Marijana Mitrović Mijatović, Director of the CBCG’s Financial Stability, Research and Statistics Department.
The visit to Brussels will continue through a series of separate meetings at the European Commission, the European Parliament and with representatives of the Eurogroup, aimed at further supporting the reform process, advancing Montenegro’s European path and strengthening its economic and financial convergence with the EU.
