In response to the statement made by Slobo Mandić, the director of Linijski prevoz d.o.o. “Putevi” Podgorica, published in the Montenegrin media which claimed that “the Central Bank of Montenegro (CBCG) pointed to a large number of counterfeit coins and suggested the suspension of the acceptance of 2 euro coins,” to ensure accurate public information under the Law on Media, we provide the following
REACTION
The CBCG has not issued any instruction, recommendation, or suggestion to operators or any other legal entity to suspend receiving 2 euro coins.
The CBCG communicates all relevant information regarding cash as a means of payment exclusively through official press releases and announcements. We want to remind everyone that all euro banknotes and coins are legal tender in Montenegro, and their rejection is considered unacceptable and illegal.
We also emphasise that if the CBCG detects an increase in counterfeit currency of a particular denomination, it informs the competent law enforcement authorities about it through official channels rather than communicating this information to individual businesses.
The CBCG also organises continuous training for interested legal entities on manually verifying euro banknotes and coins to help employees who handle cash as part of their business understand how to determine authenticity and suitability.
The CBCG will continue to monitor and analyse cash operations phenomena within its competencies and in cooperation with the relevant authorities. We remain committed to preserving trust in the payment system, protecting the euro, and safeguarding users.
Given the importance of maintaining trust in cash payment transactions, the CBCG urges all parties to refrain from making sensationalistic and unfounded claims that could confuse citizens.
