As part of the World Bank and the IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, the CBCG Governor Irena Radović and her team held a series of bilateral meetings with senior representatives of partner central banks.

Governor Radović attended a working breakfast jointly hosted by Signe Krogstrup, Governor of Danmarks Nationalbank, Anna Seim, Deputy Governor of Sveriges Riksbank, and Marja Nykänen, Deputy Governor of the Finlands Bank. The discussion focused on new forms of money, digital payments, innovations in payment systems, and cross-border payments.

Special focus was on the need to strike a balance between efficiency, resilience, and security in payment systems, as well as on the role of the digital euro and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) in the future financial landscape. Governor Radović highlighted that Montenegro, as a euroised economy using the euro, is already integrated into the European payments area through the SEPA system, and that the experiences of Nordic countries are highly valuable for the further development of digital financial services in Montenegro.

Later in the day, Governor Radović participated in a meeting of Western Balkan central bank governors with Fabio Panetta, Governor of the Banca d'Italia. Following the signing of a Letter of Intent in January this year by the central banks of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Kosovo, and Montenegro to implement the TIPS Clone project, an annex to this document was signed during the meeting, officially bringing North Macedonia into the project. This step further strengthens regional cooperation among Western Balkan central banks in developing an interoperable instant payment infrastructure.

During her stay in Washington, Governor Radović also met with Edward Scicluna, Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, to discuss opportunities to enhance cooperation between the two central banks with the aim of integrating the Central Bank of Montenegro into the European System of Central Banks (ESCB). In this context, they discussed treasury operations, cash handling, banknote issuance within the Eurosystem, and other areas of mutual interest.
